Every year since 1987 we have published the Composite Group Study of benchmarks of agency performance based on revenue size. What most agents don’t understand is that the Composite Groups is not a static, once-a-year project. Every month agents from throughout the U.S. enter their own Operating Statement and Balance Sheet data into our database, allowing them to compare their results against the appropriate peer group and updating and changing the Composite Groups database.

The reason several thousand agencies take the 20-30 minutes to enter their data is because entering their data permits them a full 12 months of access to the Composite Groups. They are given a unique password that will give them access for twelve months to compare their agency’s results against those of agents from throughout the U.S. (or against results of other agents in the same state) of similar size. And since the entries are done continuously, the Composite Groups are always changing and are always current, reflecting the data for all agencies reporting in the last twelve month.

Agencies who have entered information annually understand that their identities are fully protected because their identity information is separated from their data upon entry. And, for several years, we have given State Associations the ability to sponsor and separate Composite Groups by state to allow agencies in a state to compare their results against only their local peer group.

We urge all agents to take advantage of this industry-specific product to allow them to determine how they are performing both against their own history AND against other agencies in their size group, locally or nationally. We also urge State Associations to allow us to create one or a full set of Composite Groups specific for their state. It allows them to view the performance of their member agency group against the general insurance firms represented by our national Composite Group Study.
